ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the estimates of several large samples of pupils and ex-pupils about the degree of their happiness in co-educational and single-sex grammar schools. It seems that girls in general are happier in co-educational secondary grammar schools than in girls' secondary grammar schools. Few girls appear to be 'Rather unhappy' or 'Unhappy' in either type of school, but the major difference appears to be in the higher proportion of girls in co-educational schools who endorse the first category in the college surveys. The two groups of males are closer together, though the 'Both schools' survey, where students had experience of both types of school, shows that they estimated that they were much happier in their co-educational than in their boys' school, even when order of school was held constant. Certain factors contaminate the sample of normal co-educational grammar schools and reduce their estimates slightly, namely the inclusion of amalgamated and comprehensive schools.
