ABSTRACT

This chapter provides the estimates which give a reasonable accuracy while the free responses, not as reliable quantitatively, produce both greater depth and human colour, it is not concerned merely with grey statistical abstractions, but with living boys and girls. It presents the results of the various surveys. Among the women was a sub-group who had attended both a co-educational and a single-sex secondary grammar school. When comparing the comments of the two groups of male ex-pupils, the most marked difference is in the greater variability of the happiness of boys in boys' schools. Elusive quality said by pupils, staff and even visitors to be the 'atmosphere' of a school, remembering that all the students quoted had attended both co-educational and girls' schools. Though the free responses of the pupils about their happiness at school have been obtained and classified their inclusion would add little that is new to what has already been written.
