ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the powerful forces determining whether pupils are happy at school and whether the school atmosphere is pleasant is the relationship between the pupils. The male ex-pupils were in this instance of very similar mind to the women. The free responses of the men were inevitably less numerous than those of the women, numbering only about the co-educational schools and about the boys' schools. In the 'Check' survey the superiority of the co-educational schools which has been reported for happiness and atmosphere was not continued, the result of the Schools project for 'friendship' being repeated, and the difference again being far from statistical significance. The female ex-pupils of the 'Both schools' survey were asked two other questions which are related to 'the friendliness of pupils'. For both the co-educational and girls' schools the proportion of comments complaining of spitefulness was as expected from the estimates.
