ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the point of view of mature and responsible ex-pupils, especially of those who have attended schools of both types and can look back and compare their experiences in the two schools. Their conception of discipline will not only be that of pupils, because they are all learning how to teach in schools themselves, and their views will certainly be coloured by what they as beginning teachers consider to be good discipline. The only survey in which ex-pupils were asked a direct question about school discipline was the Third College ('Both schools') enquiry, where their double experience was of great value. In general the ex-pupils' remarks emphasise the part played by the head in determining whether the discipline is too lax, satisfactory or too strict. As would be expected they object to inconsistency in discipline and to favouritism whether it be of individuals or of one sex over the other.
