ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts covered in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book attempts to discuss the existing position of education in the boys' grammar school, to make suggestions for its improvement, and to examine the many reforms suggested in 1943 and 1944. The great majority of grammar school pupils leave round about sixteen, and it would be fair to deal with them first before turning attention to those who stay into the VIth form. Probably most experienced schoolmasters would agree that the average VIth former has reached, by the time he leaves school, a much higher level of cultural and political interest than the boy who leaves immediately after School Certificate. Recent criticism of secondary education has rightly been concentrated on questions of curriculum. It is clear that research and experiment on a large scale are needed in these matters of curriculum and methods of teaching.
