ABSTRACT

It is only too obvious that many parents ask nothing more from a grammar school than qualifications which will win for their children a better job, and therefore a higher standard of living than their own. Under these circumstances, the school must try to meet the demands which are made upon it, and the most important of these is for School Certificate results. The problem of School Certificate may be attacked in several ways. A head master who is prepared to take a few risks with his examination results in the interest of the all-round development of his pupils can himself strike a resounding blow. Another method of approach to the problem is to secure changes in the School Certificate examination. Certain changes in the School Certificate examination have indeed been made. Even after all these reforms, it is doubtful if the School Certificate examination will be in a position to escape serious criticisms which have been brought against it.
