ABSTRACT

In The Future of Education, Sir Richard Livingstone expressed the opinion that grammar schools can do little to educate a democracy. There is, indeed, a considerable degree of truth in Sir Richard's contention. But besides all this a school can give practical training in the art of self-government. A salutary lesson may be taught in schools where the council has the power to make rules and to appoint officers to enforce them. In such a system of self-government, the senior pupils must bear the responsibility to the School Council. In addition to the occasional periods which may be devoted to a discussion of such topics, the ordinary subjects which compose the school time-table must play their part in education for citizenship. The Art lesson should play a great part in the education of a good citizen, but if it is to be effective far more time must be devoted to this subject.
