ABSTRACT

An important part of motivating people is prompting them to talk about making changes and then reinforcing the positive aspects discussed. This applies to discussions about Desire, Ability, Reason, Need and Commitment to change. The fact is that when someone talks about these aspects of change, and what is said is generated from within themselves, they are much more likely to be motivated than if someone else makes suggestions to them. To enable this to happen for the service user, one needs to listen carefully for the opportunity to encourage talk about change. Enabling individuals to talk about 'successful' behaviour encourages them to engage in that behaviour. Simulating doing something is similar to performing it. This means that when one describes hisself/herself doing something in detail, he/she increases the chances of actually doing it. Talking about success and being able to picture it also helps to build confidence in being able to succeed.
