ABSTRACT

The person is ready to change and needs to prepare and plan how to go about doing so. During the process of planning, the person will decide on the specific steps they will take to solve the problem. This will help them build confidence and increase their belief in their ability to change. The process now involves the person setting goals, choosing from options to achieve those goals, exploring the skills needed to achieve them, deciding on a plan, and providing a verbal statement of commitment. Timing is paramount when spotting the right moment to move on to begin talking about setting goals and planning any changes to be made. A good way to progress from discussing change to talking about setting goals is to summarise the reasons for change. It is important that the goals set are realistic and the person feels reasonably confident in their ability to achieve them.
