ABSTRACT

This chapter describes second phase of Coping Plan called Green Phase/"The Active Phase". It explores some simple strategy ideas appropriate for this phase of the plan, with step-by-step directions for implementation and use. The Green Phase is also a crucial phase in the behaviour cycle for staff to intervene and make some changes to prevent behaviour escalating to a crisis point or meltdown. Often when a young person is in the Green Phase, staff will notice that their behaviour has changed. The young person may be described as 'bubbling' and they may be behaving in ways that let staff know that if something isn't changed, behaviour is likely to become challenging very quickly. This is the most crucial time for staff to be able to intervene to make changes to the environment and reduce the likelihood of behaviour escalating to crisis point.
