ABSTRACT

This chapter describes fourth phase of Coping Plan called Blue Phase/"The Recovery Phase". It explores some simple strategy ideas appropriate for this phase of the plan, with step-by-step directions for implementation and use. Adults can also use deep breathing with the young person in the Blue Phase when the young person is being supported to reflect upon incidents or return to their scheduled activities immediately after an incident. After any incidents of challenging behaviour it is essential that both the young person and staff have the opportunity to reflect on what happened and to do some purposeful planning about how things might be improved in the future. There are two aspects of debriefing after incidents of challenging behaviour. The first involves emotional support for staff to reduce stress. The second aspect involves reviewing practice to ensure lessons are learnt and practice can be modified if necessary in future.
