ABSTRACT

This chapter reflects on the process of using the Coping Plan and the journey of behaviour change. It also explores how the Coping Plan fits in the wider context of support for challenging behaviour, considering other ways that staff can support improvements in wellbeing for the young person by developing their understanding of the influences on behaviour from within: The young person, Their family and The wider community. The research identified some key areas of support that led to effective support for challenging behaviour, one of which was the use of detailed written plans, such as the Coping Plan. The triggers for challenging behaviour can sometimes be immediate things within the environment, but often they will result from gradual build-up over time of numerous stressors and pressures that the young person is struggling to cope with.
