ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book aims to allow people to be creative, and to appreciate and challenge self and others in their own time and in their own way, without the boundaries and constraints of a predetermined, and often judgemental, art world. It offers ideas and preparation for group activities. The book provides a series of session plans that cover a period of 15 weeks, each session lasting approximately one hour. The contents of the session plans cover basic elements in art – for example, colour and shape, composition, drawing and painting, and making prints. The book presents project ideas that further inspire and motivate the group facilitator and members. The layout is the same as that of the session plans, and offers ideas and suggestions that can be adapted by the facilitator to produce more session plans or to be used as 'one off' projects.
