ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses various methods, their alternatives, and related comments to guide group members for understanding self. Achieving a sound understanding of 'self is difficult, when that very self is continually evolving, influenced by the environment, other people and life experiences. Responses to others and to life in general, tend to be reactive, habitual and spontaneous. What is truly wanted is not always obtained, and there have to be frequent changes in order to meet individuals' own needs and desires while they are adapting to external changes and pressures. Often people accept current lifestyles as ongoing, and do not consider or find it hard to think about, change. Many people tend to hoard things: this exercise can be a comfort to those going through an exceptionally materialistic phase in their lives, and will help them to identify the special treasures hidden amongst the clutter.
