ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses various methods, their alternatives, and related comments to guide group members to experience art and the five senses. The five senses (sight, smell, taste, hearing, and touch) provide a rich source of sensation, stimulation and inspiration. Art incorporates the use of all these senses in diverse ways. Raising awareness of the ways in which we use our senses in art can open doors to new and imaginative ideas. As adults, hold memories of a range of experiences through our senses, which can be used as a source of inspiration. This is no different for adults with disabilities, who may only need support and encouragement to make future use of these senses, to enhance their artwork and their appreciation of art itself. Many artists were inspired by scenes showing people sharing a meal – in a restaurant, round a dining table, having a picnic, or being fed grapes on a couch.
