ABSTRACT

An artist is frequently encouraged to be 'observant', and to draw or paint 'what is seen'. The whole picture or complete view is interpreted as realistically as possible, or in abstract form. Some artists will make simple, childlike interpretations of what they see: others may look beyond the obvious, and many will create abstract and fantastic interpretations of what they observe. Yet every picture will be made up of parts – 'fragments', brushstrokes, lines and textures. The total picture has many parts that can be taken for granted or undervalued, especially as a source of inspiration, learning curve, or a challenge to the artist or audience. This project encourages people to be even more observant – to look for fragments within the whole picture and to see the picture from different perspectives. Montage can be used to display cut-out sections of work that people no longer want to keep, creating an abstract wall.
