ABSTRACT

Creative writing, poetry and the expressive use of words are art forms in themselves. When used in conjunction with images and objects, they can become powerful communication tools. For people with learning disabilities or communication needs, art and words can offer an effective total communication and person-centred approach to self-awareness and expression. This chapter encourages the use of observation and descriptive skills. Removing the objects and using only words challenges the artist to call on memory and imagination when creating an artwork. This can be very stimulating and rewarding. This activity offers a humorous and relaxing atmosphere, in which group members work together in a non-competitive and non-threatening way. Words need not be made into poems or short stories: single words, or short phrases within an illustration can be used. Some people may find it difficult to grasp the concept of syllables initially.
