ABSTRACT

This chapter provides considerations for integrating the musical activities explored through the World Music Pedagogy process with other academic subjects. Beginning with a functional definition of music integration—“the process of knowing music through the prism of many disciplines, subjects, and fields”—activities are provided to help music teachers craft their own integrated activities. Featured discussions include the importance of function and context when learning about the world’s musical cultures, an explanation of how Patricia Shehan Campbell’s Cultural Prism Model is used to generate questions regarding musical content for integration activities, and the various ways in which music integration can help students develop global perspectives. Sample activities of music integration for various disciplines are also provided to illustrate the concepts presented in the chapter.
