ABSTRACT

Learning by observation, however, may not be possible as a starting point for most teachers – especially if interactive teaching is "foreign territory" in a school, a school district, or an academic department. To set the stage for a virtual observation of those basic interactive skills, it may be helpful to begin with an overview – some dialogues of interactive teaching – so that the process may be examined in virtual reality. This chapter presents some examples which demonstrate interactive discussions at the secondary school level. Eileen Hood wrote the case of "The Hockey Card", based on an incident that occurred in her Grade 3 classroom. Eileen taught in an elementary school, in a suburban school district outside of a major city. The students came from single-family homes, in a residential area. They were a mixed group – Caucasian, Asian, and a few First Nations students who came from a nearby reservation.
