ABSTRACT

In this fourth dimension of World Music Pedagogy, Creating World Music encourages music teachers to allow their students to extend their understanding of musical learning by generating their own music. This chapter explores possible avenues to creating music in the style of or inspired by particular world traditions. These suggestions are intended as teaching and learning models for a music teacher’s consideration. We encourage teachers to consider the models as pedagogical exercises to be used as they are found, or as jumping-off points for creating new listening experiences that lead to composing and improvising.

Along with the Learning Pathway examples, illustrative teaching episodes are provided throughout the chapter to depict Creating World Music within a panoply of different music classrooms. Music from Vietnam, India, Syria, and Colombia is included in the classroom depictions of Creating World Music.
