ABSTRACT

The educational system trains people in skills they need to participate at various levels in the ideological structuring of the society; it teaches them the ideas, the vocabularies, images, beliefs; it trains them to recognise and approve ideological sources. The 'front-end' model of education, where people learn and store up large chunks of knowledge in compulsory schooling from 5 to 16 years, is at variance with authors' concept that the fragmentation of women's lives can and should be used as a positive educational model for women and by extension for everyone. The imaginative energy and volume of contemporary women's writing has made feminist ideas and experience more visible and caused a new interest in feminist literary criticism. The largest type of provision, one-third, is concerned mainly with the traditional female domestic arts and crafts, beauty culture, car maintenance, cookery, dress-making, flower arrangement, gardening, soft-furnishing.
