ABSTRACT

In Chapter 9, the implications of an embodied stress perspective on affluent sustainable consumption are outlined. The stress framework is used to problematize the relationship between income/consumption on the one hand and subjective well-being on the other. In particular, the dual aspects of well-being – emotional well-being and life evaluation – are contrasted with the embodied stress view. The high level of well-being at modest income levels in studies comparing GDP per capita and SWB in different countries are explained from a stress perspective with implications for the double dividend discourse in sustainable consumption studies.
