ABSTRACT

Green environments The value of outdoor activities appears to be instinctive and has led to the concept of ‘biophilia’ (Kellert and Wilson, 1993). That is, the idea that human beings are drawn towards nature and the various aspects of the natural world, including ‘animals, plants, landscapes and wilderness’ (Frumkin, 2001, p234). Since the term ‘biophilia’ was coined, numerous studies have concluded that green environments, particularly those including water, improve mood and self-esteem (Barton and Pretty, 2010).
