ABSTRACT

AS overlaps with a number of other neurological and psychiatric conditions. Those neurological or neurodevelopmental conditions, where primary problem is the wiring of the brain, include Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, Tourette's syndrome and epilepsy. People with AS are vulnerable to secondary mental health conditions, such as anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), eating disorders, and psychosis, bipolar disorder and personality disorders. It is easy to imagine how the social, emotional, behavioural and sensory struggles of living with AS can often lead to secondary mental health problems. The common co-morbidity with AS is ADHD, sometimes presenting in less active form as attention deficit disorder (ADD), without the hyperactivity. A small number of people with AS have comorbid bipolar disorder, but misdiagnosis are common. Many people with AS, with a tendency to view world through rather 'black and white', 'all or nothing', 'good or bad' filters find that their mood can quickly spiral downwards or upwards.
