ABSTRACT

Stories are very important for allowing the expression of feelings. Our feelings are validated when we see them expressed in stories. Many children have long-buried feelings of loss, separation and bereavement and are often discouraged from expressing them: 'It's time to forget about it'. As adults, we do not register that a child or teenager is upset about moving house because they will lose their friends and have to change schools; or that their pet mouse was very precious and it is a big tragedy that it has died. There seems to be a belief that children will 'get over things', whereas our capacity to show empathy is an important life skill which needs to be developed. The chapter presents a story on Kyunwoo and Jiknyo from Korea that explains their sadness when separated by the angry King. It also presents worksheets can be used with this story.
