ABSTRACT
Neglect can take many forms and can take time to identify. Some children are compensated by exaggerated gift-giving in an attempt to make up for the emotional neglect and attention. This chapter provides a story, 'Hansel and Gretel', for understanding emotional neglect and attention. Neglect can take many forms and can take time to identify. Some children are underfed, unwashed, or need clothes, shoes or bedding. Rashes, cuts and bruises may not receive attention and there may be little awareness of a child's feelings about their history, parental break-up, substance abuse or step-parents. Be very alert to the possibility of bullying, as other children and unthinking staff members can be very cruel to neglected children, especially if they are wearing shabby clothes or have not washed. The chapter also provides worksheets that will help to develop children's emotional intelligence and encourage decision making about the story.
