An angry father grumbles at the teacher who has just sent his son home because of some outrageous behaviour: ‘He can’t help it, you know. It’s his condition!’ A support worker was heard saying to other children in the playground, ‘Leave him alone. He can’t help it.’ Teenagers often make that gesture of twisting one finger against their temple – a universal symbol meaning ‘not right in the head’.
