ABSTRACT

The concept of teaching as a labor process has been explored by Michael Apple and provides helpful background for this discussion of Mrs. Warren, her working conditions, and their effect on the sexuality curriculum-in-use. This chapter documents the specific, yet largely invisible and taken-for-granted institutional arrangements that affect Mrs. Warren's classroom teaching. One-half credit of health education is a requirement for high school graduation in the state where Woodland is located, and the district conforms to this requirement by offering a full-semester course at the ninth-grade level. The physical activity component encompasses eleven objectives that emphasize cardiorespiratory fitness and includes swimming, jogging, biking and weight training. Like other high schools in the district, Van Buren's health education program is part of the physical education department. There was little time or space in Mrs. Warren's schedule during most school days for reflective curriculum planning.
