ABSTRACT

This chapter attempts to address the problem of how to help these clients. Good humour and a little exaggeration are put to use sometimes, and the activities are designed to meet the needs of clients of different ages. The French mime expert Marcel Marceau miming how to clean a window; Rowan Atkinson acting 'Mr Bean', and even some children's cartoons such as Pingu all demonstrate the power of body language. Some theorists state that as much as 60 per cent or more of our communication is transmitted by body language. Some clients have great difficulty with body language – they may not notice others using it; not understand the link between emotion and facial expression or body language; or not be able to use it accurately themselves to enhance their spoken words or to convey an emotion.
