ABSTRACT

We begins the work with our clients by asking them to think of as many ideas as they can for using, say, an empty drink can. At first, especially if their diagnosis is somewhere on the autism spectrum, they may come up with only one or two uses. But now ask them to pretend to be an artist, a musician or a hunter and do the same task. The exercises should also prove to be good fun, and can be used to lighten the mood of a session. This is a lateral thinking activity for a group of fairly able children or young teenagers. It also helps to develop narrative skills. The idea is to explain how the cars could have got into such a state. Extra praise should be given for the funniest or most outlandish ideas.
