ABSTRACT

This chapter’s central theme is the process of change within the Chaldean community from 2003 to 2013. It is divided in two chronological sections: 2003–2008 and 2009–2013. For me, it was essential to attempt to understand what it meant to be and live as a Chaldean in the aftermath of the invasion, to find a place within the new Iraqi society and to adjust one’s religious practices and identity in the context of the push for greater prominence of Islamic tradition, laws and customs to Iraqi society. This chapter provides a compelling account of Chaldean life in extreme circumstances and encourages readers to think well on the challenges faced by Iraqi communities who do not necessarily fit among the Sunni-Shia/Arab-Kurd dichotomous narratives which predominate in Iraq.
