ABSTRACT

The Vietnamese Communists won their war for independence and unification in 1975, but they were not satisfied. During the Vietnam War, North Vietnam had allied with the Khmer Rouge to kick out the US and eventually overcome the South Vietnamese government. The war began as a series of border clashes between the Vietnam and Cambodia sides. In each of the Cold War anti-government insurgencies, outside influence assisted the continuation of the war against the established power. The counter-insurgent needs to be able to bring all facets of national power to bear against an enemy, as well as counter the message, for a successful counter-insurgency. They need to be able to have both War Resolution and Termination to prevail. The warfare itself was almost uneventful. US forces completely overwhelmed the smaller and less-equipped Grenadian forces quickly and efficiently. The operation was successful overall, but the US still had several areas that needed attention.
