ABSTRACT

Modern day healthcare Performance Improvement (PI) methodologies have their roots in manufacturing. Modern methodologies started in the 1970s and 1980s with Total Quality Management and Continuous Quality Improvement Processes. These methods were the foundation of future programs such as Six Sigma and Lean Thinking. Six Sigma is based on the DMAIC process that requires initiatives to go through a very disciplined methodology by defining the problem, measuring it, analyzing it, improving it, and finally making any required controls for guidance. Many healthcare organizations have put their hat on the latest PI methodologies to improve operations. To create an environment that supports strong leadership alignment, project execution, accountability, and a focus on results, the culture has to change. By developing strong processes and infrastructure around these tactics, process transformation will begin to take shape. Many top performing organizations create this new culture by designing and developing a robust PI program.
