ABSTRACT

An organized, positive, and predictable environment is key to successful classroom management. This chapter describes key considerations for establishing a consistent, organized, respectful, culturally responsive learning environment. It focuses on specific strategies teachers can use to develop and support a respectful, positive, predictable classroom. It also focuses on establishing classroom expectations and rules that target multiple behaviors and on developing clear classroom procedures that cover critical times of the day. Classroom procedures allow students and teacher alike to function efficiently in an environment that is organized and predictable. In addition to development of classroom expectations, rules, and procedures, the chapter provides information about the need for explicit instruction that teaches students how to meet the expectations, adhere to the rules, and use the classroom procedures. Effective classroom management is further enhanced when integrated with explicit instruction matched to students' needs and when teacher's efforts are supported by school and district-wide initiatives.
