ABSTRACT

This chapter emphasizes what a teacher must do in order to facilitate learning and successful use of cognitive and metacognitive strategies worthy of the title "high leverage practice". It describes the reciprocal relationship between teacher and student in strategy instruction. The chapter provides resources for strategy instruction and classroom scenarios as a means of illustration. It also describes the critical role of the teacher in strategy instruction. The high leverage practice (HLP) "teach cognitive and metacognitive strategies to support learning and independence" is unique because both the teacher and student have significant responsibilities. Using the Self-Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD) model, the teacher emphasizes teaching specific cognitive strategies to meet a task demand while simultaneously teaching students the metacognitive strategies needed for success. Through modeling and guided practice with feedback, students can gradually gain fluency in using cognitive and metacognitive strategies, leading to independence and classroom success.
