ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces young children and their teachers and caregivers to the first stage of the World Music Pedagogy process, inviting them to consider music as a gateway into understanding the lives and artistic expressions of others throughout the world. This chapter explores the implementation of Attentive Listening activities for early childhood learners in which the world’s musical cultures are presented through short listening excerpts accompanied by techniques for drawing young children’s attention to the various elements of the music, including instrumentation, timbre, form, style, mood, tempo, dynamics, and programmatic implications. This chapter further includes practical applications of listening maps and manipulatives to bring Attentive Listening into the realm of possibility and accessibility for young children.
