ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces an analytical method used for the vertical design and analysis of the geosynthetic encased columns (GECs)-treated soft foundation. It focuses on the design and analysis of GECs. The chapter discusses "Vertical" design and "global" design for embankments supported. Vertical design allows for the calculations of settlements as well as tensile force in the geosynthetic encasement, and global design allows for global system stability and factor of safety calculations. The geosynthetic tensile force must be compared with the allowable tensile force of the geosynthetic material that is the maximum tension that the geosynthetics withstands in the long term. The chapter presents an analytical calculation allowing computing the maximum settlement of an embankment over a GEC system. An important aspect of an embankment construction over soft soil treated with encased granular columns is to verify the stability of embankment by calculating the factor of safety.
