International Agreements for the Regulation of E ast-W est Trade during the Postwar Period

During the cold war East-W est trade was minimal, since neither the autarkically oriented economic plans of the East nor the r e ­ strictive, quasi-blockade policies of the West permitted any posi­ tive development [1, 2 ], The development of East-W est economic relations did not get under way seriously until the late fifties, when long-term (usually five-year) trade agreem ents gradually entered the picture [3 ] . By 1960 there were over twenty long-term bilat­ eral trade agreem ents in effect between Eastern and W estern na­ tions. Since then their number has quadrupled (Table 22).
