ABSTRACT

This chapter investigates technological innovation in sport. By building on technology innovation research, the chapter discusses that more emphasis in sport needs to be placed on the role of technology for innovation. The purpose is to offer a view of sports innovation by focusing on technology. The chapter outlines a technology innovation view of sport and the relevant theoretical framework to understand innovation in sport. Introducing a technology innovation perspective in sport is timely due to the rapid emergence of computers and information systems changing sport management. Working on the intersection of sport and technology innovation scholarship, the chapter moves sport management research into an emerging interdisciplinary field. It highlights the complex and interesting nature of sports technology innovation, and encourages people to see the value of expanding sports management into the technology literature.
