ABSTRACT

Personal narratives offer special insights into both the uniqueness of individual experiences and the commonality of major themes. The way in which disability is understood in the society in which the disabled person lives has a strong impact: positive, inclusive societal structures enhance self-esteem, empower, and value each individual, regardless of disabling conditions. The lived experience of disability varies greatly among individuals. The professional skills the people use in working across disability are no different than the skills they use in every context of practice. The public sector has recognized that people with disabilities often have many challenges that cannot be met through family and social networks and community resources. The resource network for people with disabilities is broad and comprehensive. The chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
