ABSTRACT

This chapter explores practice models that can provide a useful framework for social work practice with individuals. The strengths assessment is an especially useful tool in working with the empowerment model of practice. The crisis intervention model adapts well for addressing the crises engendered by newly diagnosed or acquired disabilities. The case management model may also use elements of the advocacy model; empowerment may be combined with crisis intervention, and so on. Social construct both supports the empowerment and advocacy practice models and contributes valuable grounding for the utilization of the practice methods. The empowerment model assists clients to achieve their potential and to promote changes in their environment and in social policy that will promote social justice. The case management model is appropriate when the client's needs emerge from the disability itself due to its nature, its severity, and its impact on the client's overall functioning.
