ABSTRACT

This chapter explores access, mobility, and assistive technology. The Technology-Related Assistance for Individual with Disabilities Act of 1988 also has served as a benchmark for the Assistive Technology Loan Program. This program moves away from the traditional welfare sources of funds toward consumer-developed and directed loan programs to fund technology purchases. Cities and towns vary significantly in terms of providing services and accessibility for people with disabilities. However, in any community, it should be possible to designate a special parking space near a client's home, and to have signage urging motorists to be aware of a blind or deaf person in the vicinity. People generally leave the immediate area of their homes to go to work, to school, and for healthcare, and recreation. This requires transportation, either public or private. The Air Carrier Act mandates accessible air travel for people with disabilities. Parents who are disabled and who have young children have special needs far beyond their own medical care.
