ABSTRACT

Internal auditors are increasingly performing reviews of qualitative subjects that require the collection of opinions and preferences. One very powerful tool is anonymous polling/voting. By collecting information from many individuals, internal auditors can get insights about the workforce's opinions and by transforming this into objective information, get critical insights about these very difficult topics. Anonymous polling tools are often a combination of software and hardware. The software works like a surveying application, allowing participants to register their responses to questions, and rate or categorize the items presented. The hardware was traditionally handheld devices resembling remote controllers for TV or cable boxes, but recent technology now allows participants to use their smartphones, laptops, desktops, and tablets through Internet connections. Anonymous polling/voting provides a versatile mechanism to collect information from participants while making the event more interactive. Anonymous polling also provides the option for real-time participant response, so internal auditors can adjust their presentation based on the needs of the audience.
