ABSTRACT

Intelligence Quotient (IQ) measures have been considered a key indicator of an individual's potential for success. It generally predicts how well an individual can handle the cognitive challenges of a demanding job. Career advancement requires intellect and expertise, key ingredients of IQ, but it also requires other attributes that differentiates the great from the good. EI is not only an individual competency, but also an important attribute of highly productive teams. Emotionally intelligent groups show concern and compassion while holding each other up to high quality and performance standards. These dynamics increase friendship, cooperation, caring and high productivity. Professional and career effectiveness is considered as much about IQ as it is about EI. EI highlights and validates the importance of behaviors that support relationships, communication, empathy, collaboration, and perceptiveness. When internal auditors use EI they can build stronger, more productive teams, and improve the relationship within internal audit and with their audit clients and other stakeholders.
