ABSTRACT

A well-developed training and development program is essential for internal auditors to keep up. It should include a combination of technical and soft skills, but also include topics that are relevant to their industry as well as the practices of their organizations. The development of the core skills and competencies are then applied in specific industries and organizations, so the need for industry-specific training becomes apparent. Internal auditors should acquire a variety of technical and soft skills to maximize their contribution to their clients and their career advancement opportunities. Internal auditors need to address issues, find viable solutions, and communicate clearly and persuasively. Technical skill subjects that internal auditors should train on include accounting, risk management, IT, cybersecurity, fraud auditing, data mining, and analytics. In general, as internal auditors move up in their careers, the balance tends to shift from technical skills to soft skills.
