ABSTRACT

This chapter explores several commonplace approaches to intelligent disobedience. Probably the most pervasive reliance on intelligent disobedience applies to police officers performing their duties. Seasoned and effective leaders use commonplace intelligent disobedience techniques frequently and smoothly – sometimes so smoothly that the techniques are taken for granted. Leaders in organizations frequently propose organizational changes and improvements. Many leaders seek to gain consensus and a unified front when engaging in a corporate initiative. One of the most common forms of skepticism is individuals' resistance to change. This form of skepticism can create significant frustration. Properly recognizing areas of risk or concerns your team is important to gain buy-in and to drive positive outcomes. Intelligent disobedience can be executed by almost everyone in an organization, yielding great results when used properly, mindfully, and honestly.
