ABSTRACT

If you aren’t familiar with Roman mythology, don’t worry; I’ve updated the story of Damocles for you. Damocles was just hired on as the safety manager for a large construction company. He was an ambitious young guy, and wanted to someday transition to more of an operations management position. He shared this wish with the company owner, a tough boss named Dionysius Jr., who invited him to watch over the office one day while the owner was visiting the biggest construction site to date—A new theme park that was called “Gladiatorville.” The site was huge, and in addition to all of the building materials needed, the construction company was fabricating and installing all of the gladiator-themed props and decorations. The morning that he was asked to sit in the owner’s chair and manage the office, Damocles couldn’t be happier. He had the pretty secretary, Juno, bring him coffee with sugar and cream. The maintenance manager, Quirinus, was happy to adjust the air in the office to match perfectly to Damocles’ needs. Just when things were at their best, Damocles leaned back and looked up through the skylight directly above the owner’s desk and saw a giant sword suspended directly over his head by a crane, held to the crane’s hook by only a kite string. Damocles immediately jumped out of the chair, called the owner, and told him he never wanted to manage the office again.
