ABSTRACT

Entanglement and Freedom are two concepts intricately related. Entanglement refers to how we are influenced through attachments to social group identities and the roles that define the political and cultural dynamics of our schools and communities. Entanglement is driven by the human need for belonging and without awareness and attention to the undercurrents of this energy, it can impede agency for equity. Through the group dynamics of normative shared reality discourse, the innovation of new ideas is restricted. This often happens through a strict adherence to consensus building and various organizational devices that reward groupthink and reject critical thinking and creativity. Agency for equity is often operationalized through an individual's willingness to confront the forces of group dynamics. Changing the dynamics of the relationships requires courage. Freedom is one of the most difficult practices of Conscientious Engagement because most of us are scared of being alone and petrified of the consequences that come with Freedom.
