ABSTRACT

The goal of the current research was to examine relationships among contextual factors, identity development, and psychological and behavioral outcomes. The plan of research consisted of three studies. The first was a pilot study used to create the six content-specific identity scales. There was also another miniature pilot study within the main study, which determined whether the reading level and length of the questionnaire was appropriate for urban junior high students. The third, or main, study uses these scales and examines connections between context, identity and well–being. The goals of this research were to develop six, ten-item identity scales in the areas of family, friends, school, career, religion, and ethnicity, as well as determine whether these scales possessed adequate reliability, and discriminant and convergent validity. Reliability was assessed in two ways: Cronbach's alphas and factor analyses. The goal was to obtain an internal consistency of at least.
