ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the main characteristics of agro-neoliberalism, and then to analyses its politico-economic repercussions in Brazil, making use of a conceptual framework that embraces three main areas of interaction – namely, renewed public–private alliances, novel techno-economic strategies that intensify socio-ecological exploitation and the containment of critical reactions. It offers a critical assessment of the implementation of neoliberal policies and the evolution of political and ideological mechanisms alongside forces of geographical change. The chapter discusses recent politico-economic adjustments that have followed neoliberalising pressures and also early signs of weakness in Brazilian agro-neoliberalism, despite its undisputed hegemony. It uses three dimensions of agro-neoliberalism represent the specific conceptual framework to analyze the Brazilian agribusiness experience. Because of new production areas and growing productivity, Brazil has consolidated its position as a global leader, and even as a 'model' of commercial, integrated crop production. The chapter uses the synergies between neoliberalising reforms and their impacts on the evolution of agribusiness.
